Since 9-11, the overwhelming amount of resources dedicated to aviation security have been focused on the "front end". That is, passenger and baggage screening.

The ugly stepchild in the security mix remains the "back end". That is, employees, contractors, and other individuals who have full access to planes, fuel, baggage, and cargo. Far too little time, money, and attention has been dedicated to securing the AOA: Airport Operations Area.

The most recent evidence of this is the bust of 10 employees at JFK International in a drug smuggling operation.

A second North American passenger in as many weeks died today after an air rage incident involving airport police. In this case, a passenger who apprarently flipped out was Tasered by Vacouver International Airport police when he became uncooperative. He died a few minutes later.

More details are emerging about the death of a woman who died in police custody at Phoenix's Sky Harbor International Airport.
